  • Find out as much as possible about a potential employer and perspective positions before initiating contact. The links at the end of this section can help.
  • Don't overlook the value of conducting a simple web search, such as a google search, in finding or investigating businesses; click here to try that first. Also, visit the find and investigate businesses section of Do The Research for more ideas.
  • Customize your cover letter and resume to target employer needs, philosophy, and personality. Show your familiarity with and interest in the company and what it does and highlight relevant skills and experiences. This provides a clear advantage over applicants who do not address these issues beyond the advertisement description.
  • Prepare for an interview by studying the company and your perspective role in it. Use information about the employer to prepare answers to common questions such as why you want the position or what makes you qualified for the position. Also take the opportunity to review or learn less familiar aspects of the company or position. If you know the names of contact people or interviewers, learn about their roles in the company; there will be less to learn at the interview and conversation will proceed smoothly.
  • When interviewing, show you are a well-prepared and well-matched candidate, are familiar with the company, and have goals, interests, knowledge, and experiences consistent with employment with the company and appropriate for the position.
  • Write a potential employer the same day as the interview to thank them. Compliment them while showing knowledge of the company and reviewing interview highlights as appropriate. Discuss how your goals and interests parallel those of the company and position.
  • Get the offer because you presented yourself as the best-matched, most interested, and best-prepared candidate!
